Caffeine and Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Introduction: The morning caffeine kick gives us strength and stamina for the day, and pregnant women often wonder about its safety. In this blog post, we'll dive into the world of caffeine during pregnancy. Pregnancy changes life in many ways, with lifestyle and nutrition being crucial factors. While alcohol and cigarettes are definite no-nos, the question remains: What about coffee and caffeine during pregnancy and breastfeeding? We'll provide an in-depth overview.

Understanding Caffeine: Caffeine, a naturally occurring chemical compound found in coffee, cocoa beans, tea leaves, guarana berries, and kola nuts, has been a part of human consumption for centuries. Today, it's not just in your cup of coffee but also in various foods like baked goods, ice cream, candy, and cola drinks. Caffeine is known for its ability to stimulate the central nervous system and increase alertness, with effects kicking in within 15 to 30 minutes and lasting for hours.

Safe Consumption: According to the Nutrition Society (DGE), current findings suggest that consuming up to 200 mg of caffeine per day is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, from all food sources. This translates to about 3 mg per kilogram of body weight or approximately two to three cups of filter coffee per day. It's worth noting that caffeine is also found in other sources like tea, soft drinks, and chocolate. If you're not ready to give up coffee during pregnancy, you can explore decaffeinated options like our naturally processed CO2 or Swiss Water decaf, which retains complex flavor profiles.

Potential Risks: While coffee consumption during pregnancy might have negative effects, the exact implications are still under research. Some studies suggest lower birth weight and premature birth as potential consequences, especially for premature babies. As a precaution, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment advises pregnant women, nursing mothers, and caffeine-sensitive individuals to avoid energy drinks.

General Guidelines: For adults, the German government, based on the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), suggests that up to 200 mg in a single dose (approximately two cups of coffee) or 400 mg distributed throughout the day (about four cups of coffee) is safe. It's recommended to stay within 5.7 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight per day. Minors should also not exceed three mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight throughout the day. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to stick to half the adult level for the health of the fetus or breastfed child.

Caffeine Content: Here's a quick look at the average caffeine content in common products:

  • One cup of filter coffee (200 ml): 90 mg
  • One espresso (60 ml): 80 mg
  • One can of energy drink (250 ml): 80 mg
  • One cup of black tea (220 ml): 50 mg
  • One can of cola (355 ml): 40 mg
  • Half a bar of dark chocolate (50g): 25 mg
  • Half a bar of milk chocolate (50g): 10 mg

More on Roasts: Contrary to popular belief, the caffeine content isn't significantly reduced in dark roasted coffees. In fact, the caffeine content can vary depending on the roast level. Dark Roast has the highest caffeine content (72 mg/dl), followed by Medium Roast (67 mg/dl) and Light Roast (62 mg/dl).

Post-Pregnancy Guidelines: For nursing mothers, moderation in caffeine consumption is crucial as caffeine can pass into breast milk. The limit of 200 mg daily, recommended by the German Nutrition Society, applies here as well. Opting for decaffeinated coffee, such as our Swiss Water Process Decaf, is a great choice. Another option is choosing high-quality Arabica coffee, known for its lower caffeine content and milder acidity, as a more gentle alternative to commercial Robusta coffee. All our coffees are 100 percent Arabica, gently hand-roasted, and well-tolerated, making them a safe and delightful choice during the nursing phase. Instead of exploring coffee alternatives like lupine coffee, soluble grain coffee, or mushroom coffee, we recommend our Decaf for a satisfying and caffeine-free experience.
